Obituary for John Claydon East
11/08/1926 - 01/12/2014
It was with great sadness we learned that John East had died in December. Andrée & John were the founders of our society & did so much research for many of us. Our sympathy, from all members of the society, is sent to Andrée & her three daughters.
John was born in Adelaide, South Australia, on the 11th August 1926. He married Andrée Louise Lawson in Surrey in July 1949.
John, with his wife Andrée, produced the first "Points East", the East Family Newsletter for Spring 1993. Their daughter, Marian, designed the logo. An advertisement in Family History Magazine asked "East" researchers to contact John or Andrée. The inaugural meeting was held on 20th March 1993, with 11 members present. John was the Editor and Andrée the Research co-ordinator.
In October 1995 the first meeting for all members was held at Christ Church, Uxbridge. Alan East was elected the society’s first Chairman. In 1998 Andrée resigned from the committee as Research co-ordinator. At the AGM in October 2000 John decided to hand over the Editor’s position & enjoy retirement at their home in France.
John & Andrée celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary in July 2014. If John & Andrée hadn’t founded the Society, many of us would not have met and exchanged information about our families.
John died in France on December 1st 2014, with his wife & three daughters by his side. Marian said he had his sense of humour till the end.

Obituary for Andrée East

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Andrée East died on the 5th January 2017. Andrée & her husband John were founder members of the Society. We received this message from their daughter :
We received this message from her daughter :
It is with sadness that I have to tell you that my mum, Andree East died 5th January in France, following a short illness.
She and dad, John, lived in France for over 30 years and embraced the local community, where mum was a popular figure. Whether at the book swap club where she shared her love of crime writers with other English readers, or attending the local ‘Busy Bees’ craft group, she always had a ready smile and great enthusiasm.
In her later years, she enjoyed the view from the front garden, where she waved to friends and neighbours passing by. The local birds were very well fed by her and she spent hours listing to the species and observing their habits.
Mum and Dad began the East family History Society many years ago after dad said he knew little about his family background. Mum saw this as a challenge and thus began their quest for all ‘Points East’!
Kind regards
Marian East
